Nongpoh, Dec 9: A major political realignment has occurred in Umroi Constituency following the defeat of former MLA George B. Lyngdoh in the 2023 state assembly elections. Leaders, members, and supporters of the All-India Trinamool Congress (AITC) have parted ways to establish a new platform—the Umroi Constituency Progressive Forum (UCPF)—as they prepare for the 2025 MDC elections.
The UCPF aims to continue serving the constituency’s people and plans to field a candidate for the upcoming elections. Speaking at a press conference in Umroi, George B. Lyngdoh, former MLA, President of Umroi Block TMC, and AITC State Vice President, shared the reasoning behind this move.
“After extensive consultations with leaders and supporters across various units, we collectively decided to leave the AITC and create a platform solely dedicated to the welfare of the constituency,” Lyngdoh stated.
Pynskhemlang Sohtun, President of the UCPF, further outlined the forum’s plans, including the formation of an election committee to oversee candidate selection for the MDC polls.
The UCPF leadership also issued a call for unity, urging residents of Umroi, regardless of their affiliations, to join the forum’s mission. Lyngdoh added, “This platform is a collective effort to serve the community and provide strong representation in the upcoming elections. We welcome everyone to work together for the progress of Umroi Constituency.”
With its emphasis on community welfare and grassroots engagement, the UCPF sets the stage for a renewed political effort in Umroi as the constituency gears up for the 2025 elections.
