Union Home Secretary Urges Swift Resolution and Cooperation on Assam-Meghalaya, Assam-Arunachal Border Agreements

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan conducted a comprehensive review on Tuesday regarding the progress of border agreements signed between Assam and Meghalaya on March 29, 2022, and Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on April 20, 2023.

Held at the State Guest House in Koinadhora, the meeting brought together Chief Secretaries DP Wahlang of Meghalaya and the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, alongside Assam representatives, to review and advance the agreements on boundary issues.

Following a detailed discussion, a commitment was made for both state governments to expedite cooperation to ensure the completion of survey work within six months across six disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border as well as 38 agreed villages on the Assam-Arunachal border.

The Union Home Secretary further suggested that Assam and Meghalaya continue efforts to minimize differences in the six remaining disputed areas, with support from the respective Regional Committees already established.

In particular, emphasis was placed on the need for Assam and Arunachal Pradesh’s Regional Committees to become fully operational. These committees will work towards finalizing the boundaries of 49 villages over an extended period, aiming for completion by April 19, 2025.

Expressing satisfaction over the successful resolution of the Hahim area dispute, the Home Secretary directed that all steps be taken to complete the installation of boundary pillars in the Hahim area by December 2024.

Similarly, he advised that boundary pillar installation should proceed promptly in the Kamengabari and Bhalukpung areas along the Assam-Arunachal border, where pilot surveys have been successfully conducted.
