The Voice of the People Party (VPP) emerged as s dark Horse as the party snatched the Shillong Parliamentary seat from Congress.
Calling themselves a replacement of all other political parties including the regional parties in Meghalaya, the VPP sway away votes from once congress strong hold Shillong Parliamentary Constituency. While VPP candidate Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon got 5,68,313 votes, congress candidate and the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress committee (MPCC) Vincent H Pala got 1,97,688 votes. NPP candidate Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh got 1,85,268 votes.
Meanwhile, breaking the 46 years legacy, Congress candidate from Tura seat Saleng A Sangma won the seat by a
huge margin over 1.2 lakhs votes. Sangma got a total of 3,83,919, while NPP candidate Agatha Sangma got 2,28,678 and TMC’s Zenith Sangma got 48, 709.
The Congress revamped in Garo Hills as the NPP stronghold destroyed as a large number of voters this time switched their side in favour of Congress which also left the NPP and TMC dismayed.
It is a major setback for NPP and NDA in Meghalaya, the ruling NPP has 18 legislators from the total 24 from the Garo Hills region, however, despite all efforts, nothing worked to save the NPP from retaining the prestigious seat.
