West Garo Hill Police arrests 5 accused in Lower Teksragre Village case where group of men assaults woman

West Garo Hill Police have arrested  five accused after a video went viral where in a woman being flogged by a group of men.

Superintendent of Police West Garo Hills Abraham T Sangma told Meghalaya News 24 that so far five accused were nabbed by the police as the investigation is on in this case.

The incident happened at Lower Teksragre Village , Damal A.sim where a woman was seen being flogged by four men. According to Police all the five persons involved in the incident were arrested. A case has been registered at Tura Women PS under the relevant sections.

“Till now 5 arrested,” The SP said.

Asked, he said, “during enquiry more people are found involved.”

Meanwhile, taking note of the incident, Sutnga Saipung Legislator and Chairperson the Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Wom​en Empowerment, Santa Mary Shylla, has sought a report from SP West Garo Hills, Abraham T Sangma on the incident.

The Chairperson of the Women empowerment committee told Mediapersons that she will be asking Superintendent of Police of all the 12 Districts of Meghalaya to remain alert against any type of crimes against women happening in any district.

The Assembly Women panel chairperson will be visiting Garo Hills next week. During her visit Shylla will meet the victim and her family.

Sharing her thoughts about women being victims of violence in a matrilineal state like Meghalaya Shylla said “It is sad that women are being assaulted openly, it is very unexpected it is such a big crime for us and I being a woman, women will feel scared being in a state like ours.”

“This (the incident) is very unexpected, the government is in full charge and women should not feel fear. And they should know that we will make all the SPs alert against any type of crimes against women happening in any district,” she added.
