The Winter Tales Festival, an iconic celebration initiated by the Meghalaya Government to promote Green Tourism, took center stage at Ward’s Lake, Shillong. Inaugurated by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, the event runs from December 12th to 14th and heralds the Christmas season while emphasizing sustainability and cultural vibrancy.
Speaking to the media, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted the importance of balancing development with environmental preservation. He stated, “Green tourism is primarily a concept that promotes Meghalaya’s greenery, which is our USP—our nature and climate. It also serves to emphasize the need for us to preserve our greenery while we are assailed by modernity and the changes that come with time.” He continued, “The theme of this year’s edition is about finding a fine balance between growth and roots—between the fruits of development and the roots of development. That, basically, is what green tourism is all about.”
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Ward’s Lake, the festival blends creativity with eco-consciousness. It showcases traditional craftsmanship infused with contemporary artistry through collaborations with local artisans, highlighting the artistic brilliance and cultural richness of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities, who are known for their sustainable practices.
Winter Tales is more than just a festive gathering; it pays tribute to the state’s heritage by emphasizing the harmonious relationship between its people and their natural environment. The festival underscores Meghalaya’s lush greenery, pristine climate, and vibrant traditions, positioning it as a beacon of sustainable tourism.
