Furious with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that CAA will be implemented after Covid vaccination ends; the Meghalaya Youth Congress on Friday has expressed strong opposition against the Centre’s move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Speaking at the launching of the party’s social media to fight against fake news, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) general secretary Fernandez S Dkhar said that the Centre is determined to implement the CAA despite protest from the NE people.
“Instead of listening to the demand for withdrawing CAA from Meghalaya and other NE states, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had informed that the process of granting Indian citizenship to refugees under the CAA would begin once the Covid vaccination has ended,” he said.
Condemning the move of the Centre, the MPYC leader however said, “We will fight against this move of the BJP (against indigenous people of the region).”
He said that it was only the Congress government that has addressed the concerns of the indigenous people. “The Congress ensured that the provision of the Sixth Schedule was extended for protection of the indigenous people of the state in 1947, given statehood to Meghalaya and excluded it from the Panchayati Raj…”Dkhar said.
On the other hand, the MPYC general secretary said that the objective of coming up with the party’s social media was to counter fake news and to save democracy.
