A delegation from the Zila Panchayat Council of North District Goa today met the executive committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to study the powers and functions of the district council.
The Zila Panchayat Council of North District Goa was led by Chairman Shidesh Shripad Naik and chief executive officer (CEO) Ajay Gaude and was accompanied by members of the Zila Panchayat.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Chairman of Zila Panchayat Shidesh Shripad Naik said that the objectives of the visit to Meghalaya is to study the local governance model of the state and this kind of study will also be done during their study tour in other states like Assam, Gujarat and Tripura.
“We try to understand the mode of working, mode of governance which follows here and through this meeting I feel that we could improve our governance by taking new ideas from states including Meghalaya and we can suggest our state government on how to develop our district and constituencies” said Naik.
Naik informed that the Zila Panchayat had a good discussion with the EC of the KHADC and they are impressed by the way they handle the district council especially with the mode of governance, the way they govern the Hills. “Some points discussed in today’s meeting can be passed on to the state government in Goa to implement it”.
He added that during their visit to Shillong, the members of the Zila Panchayat have traveled to hilly areas and they have witnessed how the people living in those areas maintain, hence such things can be taken back to Goa for implementation.
“We have our own Panchayat Raj act under which the Zila Panchayat and Gram Panchayat are govern, Meghalaya has its own constitution and understanding of implementation of those constitutional provision, although there are differences but yes the Zila Panchayat will be taking some of the learning from this visit to our state back” he added.
