2nd Meghalaya Chemistry Olympiad-2023 held at USTM, Tura and Shillong

The 2nd Meghalaya Chemistry Olympiad-2023 was successfully held yesterday simultaneously at three centers—University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), Shillong College, and Don Bosco College Tura. Organised by the Department of Chemistry USTM, this mega Chemistry Olympiad for school children was participated by 455 students belonging to various schools in Meghalaya.

Speaking in this context, Dr Sarifuddin Gazi, Head of the Department of Chemistry at USTM said that the goal of the yearly Meghalaya Chemistry Olympiad (MCO) is to identify the most talented secondary and higher secondary school students in the Meghalaya state. “This event is a continuation of the 1st MCO held last year. The results will be announced shortly and the grand award ceremony and felicitation will be held in the last week of November 2023”, he added.

This prestigious event brought together students from Classes VIII, IX, and XI, providing a platform to evaluate and enhance their comprehension of Chemistry. Students from classes VIII, IX, and XI competed to assess and develop their skills and understanding of Chemistry. Remarkably, a greater number of school children from Meghalaya participated in MCO-23, with a total of 455 candidates involved in the competition. The competition was held at three different centers, namely Shillong College, Shillong (319 participants); Don Bosco College, Tura (43 participants); and USTM (93 participants).

The Meghalaya Chemistry Olympiad is a flagship program of the Chemistry department of USTM. Participants from other northeastern states will join the program subsequently. The Chemistry Olympiads provide an encouragement to begin a career in science, particularly in Chemistry, to undertake a lifelong journey into the realms of exciting intellectual challenges. The Olympiads are not merely a competition, but a meeting place for the brightest young minds of the state, and many friendships forged at the Olympiads form the seeds of scientific collaboration later in life. Like in the Olympics in sports, the Olympiads are a celebration of the very best in school-level science and chemistry.
