Next 2-3 months water can be supplied for Greater Shillong in case of delayed rainfall: PHE Minister

PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak expressed concern over the impending crisis in the state particularly in Tura and Shillong town.

Stating that the Umiew river which feeds the Mawphlang reservoir had dried up considerably, the Minister said because of the strong storage facilities, for the next 2-3 months the water can be supplied in case of delayed rainfall.

The Minister said, “We are getting only 50 per cent of the water now and but the storage we have will be enough for two-three months. I urge everyone to use water judiciously.”

However, such facilities are unavailable in Garo Hills. In Tura itself, the Minister said Ganol River is the main source of water and as it is drying up the government is planning to come up with a water storage facility in Ganol.

He also said that the programmes will be launched to locate other sources of water as well.

“Ganol is the only source of water and other rivers are far, but the state government is trying to find other water sources close to Tura town,” he added.

He also said the government has directed the deputy commissioners to take necessary steps to protect the catchment areas and they are waiting for the replies from the district administration.
