Leaders of the Khasi Students, Union (KSU), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) and others on Monday paid rich tribute to U Tirot Sing Syiem on his 188th death anniversary.

Floral wreaths were laid and a minute of silence was also observed in front of the statue of the freedom fighter at Madan Iewrynghep here.

Leaders of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) also joined hands in paying tribute to the freedom fighter.

Vice chairman of the outfit Manbhalang Jyrwa and political secretary Aristerwell Thongni paid floral tribute and saluted the statue of U Tirot Sing.

Speaking to reporters, KSU chief Lambok Starwell Marngar asked the State Cabinet to go to Delhi and return with a positive outcome by ensuring immediate implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya and inclusion of the Khasi language in the 8th Schedule to the Constitution.

HE said in his recent statement the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that the State Cabinet will soon take up with the prime minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah on the resolutions passed on the two issues.

“We convey our best wishes to all the cabinet ministers for their upcoming meeting with the Government of India and that they should return with a reply that will make people of the state happy which is to implement ILP and include Khasi language in the 8th Schedule,” Marngar said.

“We also want to make it very clear that it is not the time for them to just go to Delhi. This time we want them to come out clear on what transpire during the discussion and the reasons for the Centre to delay its decision on the two important resolutions. We want to know so that we can decide on our next course of action on the matter,” he said.

Stating that there is unabated influx coming to the state in absence of effective protection laws, Marngar said, “Therefore, it is high time for the government to think and act seriously on the matter.”

Asked, Marngar said if the Centre continues to seek more time to examine the ILP resolution then it will only reflect that it totally disregard the state Assembly and it will also show that the 60 legislators have totally failed the state.
