Cyclone Remal impact: Schools and Colleges to remain close on May 28 in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, MAY 27: The state government has directed closure of schools and colleges on May 28 in view of the cyclone Remal.

 

The order for closure of educational institutions has been issued by different district administrations of the state.

 

 

“In view of the cyclone Remal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning stating extremely heavy rainfall with strong winds in East Khasi Hills District with effect from May 27 to 28. Therefore, to avoid any untoward incidents all schools under East Khasi Hills District shall remain closed on May 28,” East Khasi Hills District Magistrate SC Sadhu said in his order issued on Monday.

 

In continuation of this office order, Sadhu said, “…in view of the cyclone Remal, all colleges under East Khasi Hills District shall remain closed on May 28.”

 

In Tura, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) have activated it’s 24×7 control room. A helpline number 60099 26806 is circulated by the DDMA. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani on Monday ordered that all schools and colleges in the district should remain closed on Tuesday, May 28th, as a precautionary measure.

“In view of the weather warning issued by the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) regarding deep depression in Bay of Bengal and intensification into a gradual cyclonic storm which may affect some parts of West Garo Hills on 27th and 28th May, 2024, the undersigned, keeping in mind the safety and well-being of the students, teachers and staff, hereby issue this order for closure of all Schools/Colleges on 28th May, 2024 and advise all schools/colleges to utilise 1 June, 2024 (Saturday) to recompensate for 28th May, 2024,” Chelani said.

Similar orders were issued by deputy commissioners of West Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi, East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills etc.
