MHRC closed case against former SP Rituraj Ravi after complainant or aggrieved persons fail to turn up

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has exonerated former East Khasi Hills Superintendent of police Rituraj Ravi after the complainant and the aggrieved persons failed to turn up before the commission.

The complaint was filed against Ravi following the allegations that the SP was trying to forcefully shift Bindas Syiem to a hospital. Syiem had staged a hunger strike in protest against the delay in reconstructing the dilapidated Nongpoh – Umden to Sonapur road.

The MHRC had directed the SP of East Khasi Hills district, Rituraj Ravi to appear in person before the Commission on June 20.

During his submission, the SP denied all the allegations.

Talking to Mediapersons, Justice T. Vaiphei said that neither the complainant nor the aggrieved person turned before the Commission and in the absence of them, the case cannot proceed with effectively. Under the circumstances, they have no alternative but to close the case.

“He (Rituraj Ravi) is exonerated from the charges which shall not be proved against him in absence of proof. The former SP totally denied the allegations, so we called upon the complainant to produce the aggrieved person(s) to substantiate the case but neither the complainant nor the aggrieved person appeared before us (the Commission) though they were given sufficient notice for their appearance,”  Justice T. Vaiphei said.

“In absence of the complainant or the aggrieved person(s) we cannot proceed with the case effectively, So in view of this we have no alternate but to close the case. The case is closed finished,” he added.
