Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Thursday said a technical committee comprising of officials from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the State Public Works Department (PWD) has been constituted to examine the proposed retrofitting of the Umiam Bridge.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal said that the committee will again be sitting on September 1.
The minister also informed that he had conducted an inspection to the Umiam Bridge on Wednesday to look at how to enhance the quality of the dam, its future and also to attract tourists.
Mondal said, “We are going ahead with it. IIT would be very soon submitting the report and after this we will again take this matter to the technical committee that has been formed as far the Umiam Bridge is concerned. After that, we will again have a minister level meeting then we will decide when to go ahead.”
When asked, the minister said, “Actually if you ask me how is that dam on physical verification, it looks okay but then we don’t know what happened inside the concrete, how is the thing, is there any share crack or not and all these things. Therefore, all will be provided to us after the testing is completed by IIT Guwahati.”
