The Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned Rs 29.32 crore for the development of 4 key iconic religious tourism sites in Meghalaya under the Prasad scheme.
These include Nartiang Shakti peeth, a 500 year old Durga temple believed to be a shakti peeth and is one of the most revered shrines of Shaktism in the country. Other three include Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church- the first church in Meghalaya and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for the Christian community of North Eastern India. Aitnar Pool in Jaintia Hills- an important site for Behdienkhlam Festival is also included in the list.
Lastly, the Charantala Temple Kali Temple in West Garo Hills is one of the religious tourism sites included in the list. Established in 1965 it is a must visit temple in the state for worshipping goddess kali.
Hence the Prasad scheme is set to boost the efforts and contribute to the state’s economy and vision.
The Government of India launched the PRASAD scheme (‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual Augmentation Drive) in the year 2014-2015 under the Ministry of Tourism. This scheme focuses on developing and identifying pilgrimage sites across India for enriching the religious tourism experience. It aims to integrate pilgrimage destinations in a prioritised, planned and sustainable manner to provide a complete religious tourism experience. The growth of domestic tourism hugely depends on pilgrimage tourism.
India renowned for its spirituality and cultural diversity attracts millions of National and International tourists to experience the spiritual prowess and vibrant heritage. To enhance the experience and facilities in these spiritual locations, the Ministry of Tourism launched the Prasad Scheme.
