Meghalaya Govt to convert old Assembly building into heritage museum

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the state Government is expecting to inaugurate the New Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang  by September 2024.

Talking to media in Shillong, Sangma said the state Government will consider to convert the 125- year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly before it was burned down in a devastating fire into a heritage museum.

“You are aware that the Assembly got burnt almost about 20 years back and therefore there is not much left of it but we have not touched it in any way as we have left it as it is right now because we have to function some of the Assembly work from there but as soon as we shift from there to the New Assembly site for which the construction is going on which you must have seen along the way, by September 2024 we expect to inaugurate it definitely we have a plan along with speaker to have a small museum or some kind of site there where we can have some section of that area not may be the whole area,” the Chief Minister said.

Asked, he said the state Government will see how to preserve the remains of this old Assembly structure that was built during British Time.

“There is not much left as it has burnt. We will see how far we could preserve whatever is left and have some kind of museum and experience for the people because it was the Assembly that was used during the undivided Assam when Shillong was the capital,” Sangma said.

Talking about heritage tourism in Meghalaya, the Chief Minister also acknowledged the fact that there are many heritage tourism buildings in the state including Shillong Raj Bhawan and the house where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore lived.
