SHILLONG, JAN 9: AICC incharge Meghalaya and MP from Tamil Nadu Dr A Chellakumar on Tuesday expressed confidence that the Congress will win both the Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Chellakumar said, “Definitely, we are in a better position to convince the people and hundred percent we will win both the parliament seats.”
Lauding the performance of sitting Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, Dr Chellakumar said Pala, who is also the PCC president, has done a lot for the state of Meghalaya.
“Earlier from Tura to Shillong, people have to go via Guwahati then only they can come back to Shillong but today because of Vincent Pala effort and the Congress government’s contribution today, you are seeing a good highway. People of Meghalaya they have saved money, they saved time and more development works the areas is getting developed all because of that highway. It was initiated by Vincent Pala. Like that many things he has brought to the constituency and the state of Meghalaya,” he said.
The AICC leader also claimed that the Congress party has also established the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“We have also established the IIM, NIT, NIFT etc. Like that all developmental works, it was done by the Congress party,” he said.
Dr Chellakumar said that the people have voted for the Congress but people after getting elected from the Congress ditched the public’s verdict and backstabbed the public.
“It may be our failure in properly convincing the public. I don’t say that it is our failure because people have voted for the Congress party but people after getting elected from the Congress, they ditched the public verdict and backstab the public,” he added.
Asked, the AICC leader said that as newly appointed incharge, it will be his duty to galvanize the organization. The party is in the process of filling up all organization positions which include NSUI, Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, Kisan Cell, ST/SC Cell and others.
“We will strengthen and we will regenerate everything. We are trying to strengthen our base first,” he said.
On the party’s preparation for the LS polls, Dr Chellakumar said, “I have met Congress senior leaders and workers…they are all in a happy mood. They all want to bring back the Congress regime in the state of Meghalaya. They assure that they will all unitedly work for the betterment of the Congress party for the coming Parliament elections and that whatever direction given by the AICC, they are ready to carry out.”
According to him, the party will also discuss how to go about propagating the Congress achievements.
Further, he informed that already the Congress high command has constituted a screening committee for the selection of the candidates.
“AICC has formed a committee to negotiate with the INDIA bloc. So that process is already started the process so they are in touch with all the alliance partners of the India block. So very soon will come out but this time we will declare the candidates early. Very soon we will come out the candidates and we’ll start our campaign,” AICC leader said.
