BJP to contest in all 60 seats, announces candidates’ list for Meghalaya poll

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday announced the names of its candidates for Assembly elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland. The party is contesting in all the 60 seats in the forthcoming Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election scheduled to be held on February 27.

Some last-minute additions from other political parties also found place in the BJP lists. The crucial BJP central election committee meeting in Delhi on Wednesday evening has decided to repose faith in former IPS official Mariahom Kharkrang for the prestigious North Shillong Legislative Assembly Seat.

Altogether, six women candidates were featured in the BJP list including Ferlin Sangma who joined the party in December after resigning as NPP MLA.  In fact the saffron party gave tickets to all the four legislators who switched to the party in December 2022.

Four MLAs include Benedict Marak (Raksamgre) and Ms Fairlene Sangma (Selsella) – both who were with the NPP. Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang (Mawsynram) was in Trinamool and Samuel Sangma Independent MLA represented the Baghmara assembly segment.

In 2018, the BJP had won two seats,  in 2023 again the party fielded both its sitting MLAs – A L Hek (Pynthorumkhrah seat) and Sanbor Shullai (South Shillong) .

In a clash of the Titans, Sitting MDC and the State BJP vice president Bernard Marak will contest against incumbent Chief Minister and NPP leader Conrad Sangma from South Tura Legislative Constituency.

The political enmity between two is not new as it has captured ‘headlines’ in Media.

Recent joiner, five-time MLA and former NPP leader Martin M Danggo too is given ticket from Ranikor constituency. While, state BJP president will try his luck from West Shillong Constituency.

Interestingly, in the last Meghalaya assembly elections held in 2018, the BJP had fielded candidates in 47 seats and won only two.
