Cyclone Sitrang: Schools in East Khasi Hills to remain close on Tuesday

In view of the prevailing weather conditions in East Khasi Hills District due to cyclonic storm “ SITRANG” and as per the IMD weather forecast showing continued intense rainfall in the next 24 hours or so. The office of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) East Khasi Hills on Monday announced that all schools falling in East Khasi Hills Districts (EKHD) shall remain closed on October 25.

Due to a heavy depression over Bay of Bengal, all states in the northeastern region on Monday witnessed heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, said,”Due to prevailing weather conditions in the state Deputy Commissioner of different districts of the state are directed to take necessary decision regarding closing of schools in their respective District taking into consideration of the safety of students.”

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall for three days in the northeastern states starting Monday with red alerts issued for Assam and Meghalaya. For Tuesday, orange alert has been issued wherein light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy over Eastern Meghalaya (Khasi-Jaintia Hill districts) and isolated heavy rainfall in Garo Hill districts.

According to the meteorological department Rainfall recorded till 8:30 PM –  Shillong (IMD) received 67.4 mm of rainfall, while Secretariat  Hills recorded 70.5, Sohra recorded 42.0, Barapani recorded 40.2, Mawkyrwat recorded 57.5, ICAR Umiam 57.0, while Nongstoin KVK recorded 54.5, Rongara recorded 50.5 mm rainfall and Williamnagar 49.5 mm.
