East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi district on high alert: Police

Police have sounded high alert in both East Khasi Hills as well as in Ri Bhoi district after the East Khasi Hills police in Collaboration with Ri Bhoi police conducted a joint operation in which four people were arrested and a significant amount of explosives seized.

Police claimed that this operation has foiled the attempt of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to carry out IED blasts in Shillong and Nongpoh.

East Khasi Hills police Rituraj Ravi said patrolling in the city has been intensified.

“The police are on high alert and the patrolling has been intensified. We are taking all kinds of precautions and we are on high alert on all fronts throughout the city throughout the district,” Ravi said.

Urging the public not to panic, the SP said, “If any citizen they come across any one suspicious or anything suspicious they should alert police immediately.”

It may be mentioned that following the IED blast in Panjabi lane where one person was injured on 9 March 2024 police began its massive exercise, the East Khasi Hills Police had arrested two persons on 11 March 2024 in Shillong and Dawki in connection with the IED blast at Punjabi Lane.

Earlier, a joint operation was carried out by the East Khasi Hills police and the Ri Bhoi District police in which four people were arrested from Ri Bhoi and police seized a  significant amount of explosive materials. With this an attempt to explode another Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Shillong and Nongpoh was foiled by the police.

Asked, the Superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills further informed that the East Khasi Hills police will be seeking the Custody of the four individuals arrested in Ri-Bhoi.

“We will be seeking their custody once the police custody in Ri Bhoi District is over as they are wanted in Shillong blast case as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ri Bhoi District police too sounded alert as more explosive found in continuation of investigation along with HNLC flags and other incriminating materials.
