The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) South West Khasi Hills Unit on Tuesday met minister in-charge of animal husbandry A.L Hek to demand setting up Poultry and Piggery farming at Mawkyrwat.
Speaking to media persons, president of the FKJGP South West Khasi Hills Unit, Kenes Nonglait said that the main reason to demand for setting up of Poultry and Piggery farming at Mawkyrwat is because at present the state always falls short when it comes to production of meat due to lack of farming which result in the high cost of meat.
Nonglait claimed that the state imports more than 80,000 tons of meat for consumption as the state is not self-sufficient in production of the same, thereby impacting the cost of meat from Rs.250 per kg to Rs.420 per kg.
“We have seen the high cost of meat in the state and when asked, people informed that due to lack of meat production in the state, people have to buy meat from outside the state like Assam which is why they need to increase the cost of meat” said Nonglait.
Nonglait said that the demand of setting up poultry and piggery farming in the district is not only to cut down the cost of meat but it is also to create employment and to generate income among the people of South West Khasi Hills.
