The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday demanded the State government to revive the project to construct the science & commerce stream building for the Mawphlang College.
In a memorandum submitted to the Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma, KSU Mawphlang unit president Bantyngshaiñ Lyngdoh Mawnai said, “The Union through the education department call on the State government to revive the project once again, so that the rights of many budding students shall not be curtailed and the presence of these two streams will further enhance the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of the Mawphlang area in higher education.”
The foundation stone for construction of the science & commerce stream building was laid by the former chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma on August 24, 2017.
20 acres of land was also donated free of cost by the Hima Mawphlang.
Mawnai said the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India also approved Rs 36.55 crore from the Central Financial Assistance (CFA) under the heading of Non-lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) with a 90:10 funding pattern for the construction of these buildings.
The final tender order was released on October 10, 2017, with the expectation that work would begin on September 17, 2019, and that it would take 18 months to complete.
“Since the construction of these buildings has not been completed and the project has been put on hold for unknown reasons, it has severely damaged the hopes of students from low-income families who wish to pursue higher education in the science and commerce streams,” he said.
He said that the minister has assured to look into the matter.
