NEW DELHI: A Meghalaya BJP delegation led by Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader AL Hek met Union Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar and is schedule to meet Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Tuesday to discuss the pressing challenges faced by North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and to urge swift resolution of these issues for the benefit of the university community.
Constituted by BJP Meghalaya State President Rikman G Momin, the delegation included M Kharkrang, Chief Spokesperson BJP Meghalaya, Dr. E Myrshing, General Secretary, and David Kharsati. The team traveled to New Delhi to engage with BJP leaders and the Union Minister of Education.
Speaking about the meeting, Hek stated, “The delegation is scheduled to meet Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan, and we are awaiting the meeting. So far, we have met Dr. Sukanta Majumdar and apprised him of NEHU’s situation.” He expressed optimism, adding, “We are very optimistic that the Centre will take a call soon in this regard.”
Before their departure, the delegation held discussions with representatives of the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) in Shillong. The meeting focused on critical issues impacting the university’s administration and student welfare.
Meanwhile, a two-member inquiry committee appointed by the Ministry of Education visited the NEHU campus yesterday to meet with students and faculty. The committee listened to demands for the immediate removal of Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha S. Shukla and conducted an inspection of campus facilities, including buildings, the health center, roads, hostels, and the library.
The inquiry committee, comprising Prof. D.P. Singh, former UGC Chairman, and Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, former Vice Chancellor of Assam University, is tasked with preparing a report based on their findings. The report is expected to be submitted by November 29.
