Expressing concern over the overall issue of illegal immigration in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said the state Government has continuously put pressure on Centre to address the influx issue- be it through implementation of ILP or MRSSA.
Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Sangma said he cannot reply on the reason why despite several attempts centre is still ‘Mum’ on the issue.
“Concerning the issue over the Government examining it as the Government of India is to reply to it’s not something I can reply on behalf of the Home Minister or the Government of India, so definitely I think the answer lies with them,” the Chief Minister said.
“….but we have continuously time and again have put pressure on the Government to find a way so that we are able to address the issue whether it is the MRSSA or whether it is the ILP or whether it is the any other mechanism that is there we are concern about the overall issue of illegal immigration,” he added.
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) recently has demanded Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to clarify the reason for the Centre to delay implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said, “We are surprised by the outcome of the meeting. Such meetings have taken place several times but there is no concrete outcome yet. The reply they always give is that the MHA is examining (the ILP resolution), the home minister is examining it and now the Prime Minister is examining it.”
“Therefore, we would like to respectfully ask the chief minister to give us more clarification on this matter as to what kind of examination, how much time they would still need to examine and what are the areas of concern they want to examine in respect of the ILP so that we may perhaps give suggestion,” Kharjahrin said.
Recently, President of United Democratic Party Metbah Lyngdoh said the party will be meeting Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and try to discuss why the ILP issue is still being examined.
