CM says Meghalaya set up its own judicial panel to probe into Mukroh incident: Witnesses did not depose before Phukan commission

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said, the state Government has set up its own judicial commission to probe into the Mukroh incident.

Reacting to the recent closure of case by the one-person commission headed by Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan (retd) instituted by Assam Government probing the Mukroh violence after no one turned up before the commission during its sitting at the Assam House, Shillong, Chief Minister Sangma said the state Government is waiting for the reports from judicial commission set up by Meghalaya.

“I said the judiciary commission has been put up by Meghalaya and we are ensuring that that commission works and submits​ its report at the earliest,” Sangma informed Meghalaya News 24.

Stating that the state Government officials were providing all cooperation to Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan (retd) commission, he said, “Cooperation is  there whenever necessary, officials are in touch, so it’s​ not that we are completely neglecting , may be at that point of time when that person came our people were not there. “

Interestingly, th​rough the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills was also directed to serve notice upon the relevant witnesses to appear before the Commission on 07.08.2023.

But no response from the Government side and none has appeared to record their statement.
