Meghalaya Govt targets 5 lakh functional household tap connections under JJM before Christmas

PHE Minister Marcuise Marak on Thursday informed that the department is targeting 5 lakh functional household tap connections before Christmas under the Jal Jeevan Mission. With 62.12 percent completion rate, Meghalaya looks for better implementation in next one month.

“We are targeting 5 lakh connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) before Christmas,” Marak said.

He shared that currently, 4,04,000 households have already been connected with functional household tap connections.

He said that the target set by the Government of India is to complete physical work of JJM by January 26, 2024.

The PHE Minister also responded to allegations concerning functional tap water connections in the Garo Hills region.

With the implementation of the JJM project in the state according to the 2011 census, the PHE department is facing a herculean task as the number of households has increased many fold.

Talking about the problem faced by the department while implementing JJM project in the state, the Minister said, “Some of the projects could not complete the entire connection because the project we have to prepare as per the census of 2011,  so by now the number of household has increased, so that is their problem we faced during the implementation.”

After reviewing the implementation of JJM projects in the state, Marak expressed his satisfaction and said it is done in three ways, one is retrofitting, second one Augmentation and thirdly the new connection.

“…..if water has already reached the village and the flow is very sufficient, then the project is taken under retro fitting which means just to connect to the households only. No repairing needed, only connection is given. Another is augmentation , the project but a lot of renovation needs to be done and that project was successful and was able to give water to the household and the third one is  new where no supply scheme was there,” he added.
