‘NPP is a party which has already shown its willingness to work with congress’: Ampareen

Terming the political development leading to the formation of the NPP-Congress executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as a good situation, Cabinet Minister and Spokesperson of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) II Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday said fighting a battle on its own for a political party is difficult if its position is compromised.

Claiming that she had already foreseen the political drama a year back, the former Congress Legislative Party leader said NPP has already shown its willingness to work with Congress, following which the five legislators of the opposition Congress were suspended in 2022 for supporting MDA 1 Government last year.

Talking to reporters, Dr. Lyngdoh said, “NPP is a party which has already shown its willingness to work with the congress, when they called us (then congress legislators) at that point of time when we were five MLAs, they were already willing to partner with us, if the MPCC takes its cue from that then I think it will be in the interest of the general public at large because fighting battle on your own is always difficult, especially when your position is compromised.”

Lyngdoh said she is going to advise her party to take on board all like-minded parties to work together on serious issues confronting the state as it would benefit if all come together to strengthen the MDA-2 government.

“To be frank and honest, this is a writing on the wall that I had seen about a year back. This is something I had perceived would happen,” the spokesperson of the MDA II Government said.

Talking about the proximity of Congress and NPP in the Khasi Hills Autonomous district council, Lyngdoh said, “We are happy that that has happened because we have very deep relations with friends from the Congress, and for me personally, this is a good situation to be in and it is a position, which consolidates in the interest of the service to the people. Now I am with the NPP and anybody working with the NPP at this point in time is a very good proposal and we welcome all who are now working together with the NPP in the KHADC and we look forward to a very fruitful political relationship in the KHADC.”

The NPP has toppled the UDP-led EC with the support of the Congress through a no-confidence motion moved during the first day of the Council’s summer session.

Lyngdoh said, “To be very frank and honest with you, this is writing on the wall that I had seen about a year back. This is something which I had perceived would happen and over and above that, I am with the NPP, I am not going to rewind back, I am not going to compare my situation with other peoples’ situation because at the end of the day, politicians have to survive.”

Stating that she is not aware of the reason for the change in the KHADC, Lyngdoh said, “What exactly went on in the KHADC that heralds this change is something which I am not privy to and my opinion is very simple. My opinion on this entire allegation of let down and of not conforming to coalition partnerships in government with the UDP is something which is best replied to by the MDCs, who probably felt this experience on their own.”

“ I don’t understand why there should be an allegation of that nature as well. I mean it is a fact that political pressures are conditioned by certain factors and if the MDCs felt like they no longer had confidence in their leader and the EC then I guess they had the right to rise and protest about it and to seek for change and seek the number for that change. As in politics it is not about how one feels, it is about the developments that are related to politics,” she added.
