The National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division), Regional office Shillong, along with the rest of the country, today celebrated the 17th National Statistics day at Shillong College in line with this year’s theme ‘Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals’ .
The chief guest of the event, Prof. T. K Chakrabarty, NEHU addressed the participants and delivered a presentation on the importance of the statistics and SDG framework. He explained in detail the importance of aligning States’ own Indicator frame with the National indicator frame for effective monitoring of SDGs.
While delivering his keynote address in the event, Shri N.Mohondas Singh, Joint Director and Regional Head NSSO(FOD) Shillong narrated briefly about the life of Prof. Mahalanobis and his achievements. He stressed the importance of the presence of reliable data in policy making and appealed to the people for cooperation when NSSO officials visit them for collecting data for various surveys conducted by NSSO. He further informed about MoSPI’s contribution in the development of the State Indicator framework aligned with the National Indicator framework for effective monitoring of SDG goals.
Dr. E. Kharkongor, Principal, Shillong College also stressed the importance of Statistics and reliable data. She also expressed about the holding interaction programmes to facilitate job opportunities for students who opt statistics as a subject.
Prof. Don Manik Syiem, Shillong College and Prof Evarilang Tariang, Shankar Dev College, Shillong delivered a brief presentation on the theme of Statistics Day 2023. A quiz session was conducted about awareness of Statistics. The event was also attended by Mr. M. Marwein Deputy Director, DES Meghalaya, Smt. M. Nongrum, Assistant Director, NSSO (FOD) RO Shillong, senior & retired officials of NSSO (FOD), State officials, academicians and students from the different colleges.
Government of India has declared the 29th June to be celebrated as “National Statistics Day” every year. This day is the Birth Anniversary of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis (1893-1972) who is widely accredited to be the “Father of the Indian Statistical System”. His pioneering work in this field has contributed greatly to our nation for planning, development and several other fields.
The major objective of celebrating Statistics Day is creation of public awareness, especially among the young generation, on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for development of a country.
