United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh, on Monday praised the Garo community for their political awareness and maturity.
While making a candid observation, Lyngdoh said, Garos are far more mature and far more politically astute, compared to the Khasis.
“Garos are far more mature, far more astute politically, compared to us (the Khasis). We made a lot of unnecessary noise about a lot of things but they have shown more wisdom and maturity,” The UDP leader said.
Referring to the recent demand for a Khasi chief minister, the UDP leader said the Garos displayed their views through voting as they have given 18 out of 24 seats to NPP.
“For instance, a few noises were made about a Khasi Chief Minister in 2023, there was no such clamour in the Garo Hills. But what they did was they put an end to all hopes of a Khasi Chief Minister by ensuring that out of 24 seats in Garo Hills sector, 18 seats went to the NPP. They did not make any noise about it,” Lyngdoh added.
“We made all the noise, and finally it ended up by lighting the spark in them that we will be more comfortable by having a Chief Minister from our own region and therefore, they voted vehemently in favour of NPP,”he said.
