Two people were apprehended on Monday by the police in Ri Bhoi District following a scuffle between the supporters of the NPP and the VPP during an election rally at Umsning.
The incident took place when the NPP candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh was campaigning at Umsning. She was also accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister (Home) Prestone Tynsong.
According to police, some inebriated VPP supporters went to the NPP public meeting and started shouting HA U PRAH which has resulted to a heated argument.
Confirming the incident, Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi District Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said, “Today’s in the NPP meeting at Umsning, there were some drunkards who started shouting “HA U PRAH “, but later they were apprehended and to avoid any untoward incident they were taken to Umsning PS. The meeting is going on smoothly and Dy. CM is also present at the meeting.”
Police informed that the medicals of the two persons were also done.
It may be mentioned that the escalating situation prompted Ampareen Lyngdoh to urge VPP party supporters to disperse, aiming to prevent any potential breaches of law and order.
With just 10 days left for the polls, the campaigning has reached its pinnacle in Meghalaya; several political parties have put on all their efforts to garner votes for the Shillong as well as Tura Parliamentary seats. The State will go for polls in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held on April 19.
