NPP legislator and cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday said he want TMC to contest Tura seat.

Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Sangma said the leadership of TMC should contest the Tura seat.

“They (TMC) is one of the popular party and if they don’t contest the morale of the leaders and legislators will go down,” Rakkam said.

It may be mentioned that if TMC and Congress both put up candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, the experts believe that the opposition vote share will be divided.

Asked about the candidates, the NPP leader said, “Election is election and it is the people’s decision whom to support during elections.”

He, however, maintained that the parliament needs strong heavy weight representation from the Region who will convince and inspire the National politics.

Stating that it is not wise to elect candidates from the opposition parties, Rakkam said the state should look forward to have MPs who will work closely with the leadership in Delhi to bring development.

“Today there are many problems against the Tribals, against the Christians, against the development, against region and there are many issues, in the parliament the Northeast region should send louder voice which has more impact eg like inclusion of khasi and the Garo language in the 8th schedule of the constitution, we need somebody in parliament, in Delhi who will work hand in hand with the union Minister, with the prime minister, with the president,” he added.

Maintaining that the Tribal representation needs bigger voice in the parliament, Sangma said, “The objective of NPP is to bring Tribal together, the parties of the region.”
