Shillong Traffic Police destroyed 181 modified silencers, duplicate or replica of exhaust pipes

East Khasi Hills police on Wednesday destroyed as many as 181 modified silencers, duplicate or replica of exhaust pipes seized by the Shillong Traffic Police as a measure on the crackdown on cars and bikers with modified silencers.

The seized modified silencers were destroyed using a road roller at Police Reserve in presence of Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger and Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, Shillong city.

Talking to media,  Nongtnger said, “Motorists are exhorted to avoid retrofitting with exhaust pipes as it is a social nuisance to the general public. The checking of such LMVs / two wheelers shall continue and stringent action will be taken against violators.”

The Shillong Traffic Police earlier have urged the owners to get them removed and replace them with the original exhaust pipes.

Vehicles, both two-wheelers and four wheelers, which are retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes causing noise pollution in the city, especially at unearthly hours, is in violation of Section 182A(4)/190(2) of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 causing inconvenience to residents of the city, the STP said.

Earlier, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) have warned vehicle owners against retrofitting exhaust systems in vehicles, while underlining the discomfort caused to the general public by the noise pollution.
