Very soon the hawkers will no longer be seen in Khyndailad (Police Bazaar) as the area with rather be turn into a ’Music hub’.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has informed that registered hawkers from Khyndailad will be shifted to government market complexes.
“We have decided to make Khyndailad as a pedestrian zone. We will shift all hawkers to government commercial complexes like MUDA complex, Polo market and parking lot at Iewduh,” Lyngdoh told reporters after chairing a review meeting on Thursday.
He said the district administration and the municipal board have been entrusted with the task to rehabilitate around 200 registered hawkers. The decision will be implemented after Sohiong election or during the first week of June.
He also informed that there will also be improvement of the area for convenience of the pedestrians. According to him, all projects will be completed within October, this year.
The minister also informed that Khyndailad area would also be turned into a ‘music hub’ where buskers will get to perform and entertain pedestrians and tourists visiting Shillong.
“We have decided to declare Khyndailad as a pedestrian zone to encourage people to walk around and enjoy good music, see how Shillong does not claim to be a music capital but actually is a music capital by encouraging young singers to be all around that stretch and it would be more in the interest of the citizens of Shillong and residents of that area it would be better for them to hear musicians than to hawkers screaming,” he added.
