Phulbari legislator and cabinet Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Wednesday said the perennial flood problem in Phulbari area requires the involvement of the state Government and also the central water commission to conduct a survey.
Thousands of people are affected due to floods which creates havoc in Phulbari- Rajabala areas which is due to the back water of Brahmaputra and Jinjiram rivers.
Talking about it, Mondal said, “This is a perennial issue, we want this problem to be solved as early as possible. There are two types of flood we face , one type which every year you hear one is because of the back water of the rive Brahmaputra, the entire belt gets flooded. Another type of flood is flash flood because of the heavy rains in the hill areas. “
Stating that the farmers are the most affected one, the cabinet said the crops cannot be harvested due to floods.
“Last to last year, our people could not harvest even though they have put heavy investment in the high yielding variety of rice. So they could not harvest the crops. We are trying also. It requires the involvement of the state Government and also the central water commission to survey,” the Minister said.
Asked about the solution to this problem, he said, “Solution will be the embankment but then we have to take care of the run of water from within the area and also from the area of the region. “
The Phulbari Legislative Constituency has 31,657 voters, including 16,080 male and 15,577 female.
Floods are a problem in the plains belt of West Garo Hills, and Phulbari which affects thousands of people.
Locals say that about 8000 to 10000 people in villages such as Charbatapara, Haribhanga, Soleartek-Majirare and Islampur are affected by floods every year, particularly in June-July, with several hundred acres of paddy destroyed by the deluge.
