Feasibility report on Shillong airport in next two months likely

Meghalaya Government is conducting a feasibility study for the proposed greenfield airport and also feasibility studies are being conducted on the expansion of the present Shillong Airport at Umroi.

Informing this Minister Incharge of Tourism Paul Lyngdoh said the feasibility report will be available in the next two months.

“Yesterday I had a meeting, I called the Commissioner Secretary Dr Vijay Kumar, now two things are happening, one is there is a feasibility report that is being prepared on the expansion and two is the identification of a new site for the new airport,” Lyngdoh told reporters in Shillong.

Admitting that there are challenges like terrain and topography, the Minister said, “…the airport started years ago, so these are challenges we have to meet by upscaling technology.”

The feasibility study refers where the multi-disciplinary committees are expected to review different aspects of the plot.

At present ATRs and smaller aircraft like Bombardiers are landing at the existing airport and the length of the runway and the surrounding hills do not make it feasible for wide-bodied aircraft to call at Umroi.
