MeECL disconnects power lines to over 100 illegal settlers residing at Shillong Cantonment Board land

SHILLONG, APR 26: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Friday disconnected power lines to over 100 households of illegal settlers, who are residing in a plot of land belonging to the Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB).

The alleged power theft by illegal settlers was detected after a spot inspection was conducted by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday on the existence of illegal settlement of people within the jurisdiction of the Board located opposite the Fire and Emergency Station, Iewduh (Bara Bazar), Shillong after receiving several complaints from the general public.

Officials of the MeECL along with police in presence of HYC members took swift action to disconnect and seized all power cables from the area.

During the inspection on Thursday, the HYC found that about 80-100 households were staying in the said plot of land by constructing huts made of plastics and other scrap materials. Further on enquiry, the HYC also came to learn that these people were illegally staying there without any permission from the Cantonment Board or any other authority.
