UDP chief assures to meet CM to discuss why ILP issue is still being examined

President of United Democratic Party Metbah Lyngdoh on Saturday said the party  will be meeting  Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and try to discuss why the ILP issue is still being examined.

Talking to media, the UDP chief said that his party will ensure that the matter related to ILP demand is being pursued again and again till the Centre responds in a very positive way.

“From the party level we will be meeting the Chief Minister and try to discuss this (ILP) issue and why it is being examined till now, let us get clarity,” Lyngdoh said.

He said it was not the first time that the State delegation led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his necessary intervention into the important issues that also include Khasi and Garo languages to be included in the Eighth Schedule.

“This is being placed a long time ago, it’s not a very fresh or new issue it’s a very long pending issue so we will again discuss with the Government along with the Chief Minister on how do we peruse this matter that it will see the light of the day,” the UDP President said.

With the clamour for implementation in Meghalaya continues, the president of United Democratic Party said, “We are glad to know that again this time; this is not the first time that Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues met the Prime Minister. Even in the previous meetings with the Prime Minister also the same has been addressed with regards to these very important issues of the state, one is the ILP and one is the khasi and Garo language to be included in the 8th schedule. So since the Prime Minister has mentioned as we have seen from the media reports we try to see that is being pursued again and again.”

Infact, in December 2019, the Meghalaya Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on the implementation of ILP and subsequently, the government took up the matter with the Central government but there was no response from the centre until recently the PM assured to examine the matter.

Earlier, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) had demanded the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to clarify the reason for the Centre to delay implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.

Speaking to reporters, HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said, “We are surprised by the outcome of the meeting. Such meetings have taken place several times but there is no concrete outcome yet. The reply they always give is that the MHA is examining (the ILP resolution), the home minister is examining it and now the Prime Minister is examining it.”

“Therefore, we would like to respectfully ask the chief minister to give us more clarification on this matter as to what kind of examination, how much time they would still need to examine and what are the areas of concern they want to examine in respect of the ILP so that we may perhaps give suggestion,” Kharjahrin said.
