IMD issues ‘Yellow Alert’ for Meghalaya; Predicts ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall for next 5 days

Shillong, March 20:  The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad centre has issued a yellow alert for the North Eastern states including Assam and Meghalaya.

In a Press Statement issue by the IMD, has predicted enhanced rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning over the Northeast till Sunday.

“The trough from Jharkhand to south Assam now runs from northeast Madhya Pradesh to south Assam and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level with embedded cyclonic circulation over east Bangladesh & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Under its influence moderate rainfall is likely to occur at many places accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds of 30 to 40 Kmph which is likely to occur at isolated places over Meghalaya on 20th March 2024. Heavy Rainfall with thunderstorms/lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Meghalaya on 21st March 2024,” The statement said.

Consequently light to moderate amounts of showers along with lightning-laced thunderstorms are likely over many parts of Arunachal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Wednesday to next Tuesday (March 20-24).

Available data indicates that light to moderate rain occurred over Meghalaya during the last 24hrs.
